Revit vs. AutoCAD

Both AutoCAD and Revit are widely used CAD software to create 2D drawings such as floor plans, levels, details, etc.; 3D models and objects; construction documents and rendered images.

While there are many differences between Revit and AutoCAD, both programmes are often used within the same organisation. The main difference is that AutoCAD is primarily a drafting tool to create basic geometry that represents real life, while Revit is used to create geometry that is equipped with real-life information, hence the term building information modelling, or BIM.

Get Revit and AutoCAD together in the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection.

At a glance

  • BIM software for architects, engineers, contractors and designers
  • Create a unified model that contains real-life information
  • Great for modelling, clash detection and change management
  • Widely used commercial software for 2D & 3D CAD
  • Create basic geometry that represents real life.
  • Great for drawing precise line work, such as level details
