C2C Engineering was tasked with building a multi-product, multipurpose, state-of-the-art, batch-type, DCS controlled plant for Deccan Fine Chemicals. Deccan is known for building integrated manufacturing facilities which offer a high level of automation. Their sites are usually spread across multiple acres and host advanced equipment, environmentally compliant processes and systems. Deccan plants adhere to the highest quality, safety and sustainability standards required for commercial scale manufacturing.

Creating customer delight with in-time delivery of a state-of-the-art chemical plant

Chennai based C2C Engineering is a Small and Medium Scale Enterprise (SME) with big ambitions for growth. Since 2006, C2C Engineering has established a reputation for offering excellent concept-to-commissioning services across various industrial sectors. They are often called upon to provide multidisciplinary design & detailed engineering services for the civil, structural, process, mechanical, piping, emergency management, electrical and instrumentation disciplines. When required C2C also manages procurement, inspection, expediting, construction and project management activities. They are sometimes also called upon to undertake turnkey contracts (Design & Build). Their strengths lie in piping, electrical & instrumentation.

Over the years, C2C Engineering has steadily built up competencies to offer a whole host of services to industry leaders including, Asian Paints, BASF Chemicals, BASF Catalysts, Deccan Fine Chemicals, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, PPG Asian, Valspar and other chemical, paint and pharmaceuticals (API) companies.

C2C makes use of a number of top-of-the-line engineering solutions for successful delivery. It uses One AutoCAD’s Plant 3D Toolset to generate intelligent P&IDs, for equipment modelling, piping and structural steel detailing, as well as AutoCAD Revit for building modelling, and AutoCAD MEP toolset for electrical and instrumentation detailing.

The Challenge

Deccan is known for building integrated manufacturing facilities which offer a high level of automation. Their sites are usually spread across multiple acres and host advanced equipment, environmentally compliant processes and systems. Deccan plants adhere to the highest quality, safety and sustainability standards required for commercial scale manufacturing.

With three locations across India, in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Goa, Deccan was looking to expand its presence at its Tuni site in Andhra Pradesh. They approached C2C Engineering to work on ‘Launch Plant’, a project spread over a total area of 3120 sq. m. All in all, the project contains a Main Block of 52m x 66m spread over 6 levels, an Auxiliary Block of 30m x 8m spread over 3 levels, a Scrubber Block of 14m x 14m, a Tank Farm of 14m x 66m, interconnected with a Pipe Rack totaling 171m.

This was a challenging ask, with C2C being tasked with delivering a plant designed to accommodate 905 pieces of equipment, 11250 pipelines totalling 52 Kms of CS & SS pipes of sizes varying from ½” to 16”, 26 Kms of MSPTFE pipes consisting of 26,000 spool pieces of sizes 0.1 to 3 m, 362 electrical motors, 67.5 Km of electrical power cables, 35 Kms of electric control cables, 196 Km long instrumentation cables, control panels, on/off valves and more.

C2C Engineering is reaping the benefits of being an early adopter of 3D capabilities, making the shift to using 3D platforms almost a decade ago. The company realized early on that the future lay in embracing 3D, and four years into starting operations they began looking for the right product to meet their needs. Finding a product that suited their budget proved to be difficult, until they came across AutoCAD Plant 3D, an intelligent P&ID tool which would allow them to create, modify and manage schematic piping and instrumentation diagrams.

So, when Deccan contracted them to execute a complicated project in 2017, C2C was ready for the challenge, and prepared to deliver their biggest engineering project to date.

Unleashing The True Power of 3D

Fast forward to the present, and with many more complicated projects under their belt, C2C had put in the work required to exploit the full potential of the One AutoCAD Plant 3D, and began utilizing all the feature benefits contained in this latest version.

They chose AutoCAD Plant 3D as an exclusive platform to execute this project to:

  • Create piping specifications based on client requirements
  • Create piping and instrumentation inline components
  • Modeling all equipment and piping
  • For visualization and to create walkthroughs

The Plant 3D advantage

C2C was able to impress their clients by delivering this complicated project on time. They were able to reduce the time taken to generate orthographic drawings, isometrics, and BOQs as compared to previous projects. Having put in many hours understanding the intricacies of this platform, the accuracy and efficiency of the workflow improved significantly.

Focusing on innovation, C2C was able to customize the Autodesk solution to suit their client’s requirements. For instance, various piping and instrumentation inline components were customized, lined piping specifications were created and isometrics extracted with BOQ.

Team members from the process, civil, piping, electrical and instrumentation departments worked collaboratively to achieve specific goals. The team processed P&ID prepared on AutoCAD P&ID (part of One AutoCAD Plant 3D), modelled buildings using AutoCAD Revit. Equipment and piping modelling was done using AutoCAD Plant 3D and electrical and instrument cable tray routing was executed using AutoCAD MEP. Additionally, Navisworks was used to integrate independently developed areas of the project into a single file so clash detection and reviewing was made easier.

Project Management

C2C was also involved in the construction phase of the project on a regular basis. The team participated remotely via conferencing and undertook fortnightly site visits to ensure that work was on track as per the 3D models created. Their client also conducted frequent reviews during design and modeling to sign off on each phase of the visualization.
